SVALA is already No. 1in the actual charts in Iceland and already had a lot of success in her life. But also a hard accident which changed her life for ever. Read now this interview with a very special depth!

1. SVALA - how would you like to introduce yourself to our readers?

My name is Svala Karitas Björgvinsdóttir and I´m an icelandic singer and songwriter. I started recording music when I was 7 years old. I´ve released countless hit singles and been in three bands throughout my career. I had my first number one single when I was 11 years old and then my second number one single when I was 16 years old in Iceland. When I was 20 years old I was signed by EMI in America and signed one of the biggest record contract ever made with an icelandic artist. My first american single which I co-wrote came out in 2001 and became quite popular in America and was on the top 30 Billboard Charts over there. I´ve released 2 solo albums and 3 albums with my band Steed Lord. I formed my band Steed Lord in 2006 and we had quite the success worldwide. The band was together for 10 awesome years. We toured all over the world, designed a clothing line for H&M, had our music in a lot of american tv shows, commercials and a couple of movies. I moved to Los Angeles in 2009 and I´ve lived there for 8 years with my husband who is a songwriter, producer and director. I have my own clothing line called KALI which is sold online. Last year I formed my new band Blissful and our single "Elevate" came out and did really well on Spotify. I became a judge on famous tv show The Voice in Iceland in 2015. I adore cats and science fiction books and movies.

2. You already had a lot of musical experiences. What was the biggest success for you so far?

It´s hard to say cause I feel proud of many things I´ve accomplished. I became a judge on the famous tv show The Voice in Iceland in 2015 and I´ve done two seasons of it. It´s a big honour to be a part of such a huge show that´s in 62 countries around the world.

3. 2008 you had a hard accident, how did this impact your life and musical career?

Yes it was an almost fatal car accident in Iceland with my band Steed Lord. We were all injured very seriously and had internal bleeding and many broken bones. I stayed in the hospital for 2 weeks and my husband was there for 4 months. He almost died. It was a horrible accident that changed our lives forever. He had many surgeries and we weren´t sure if he was gonna make it. Me and my husband and both his younger brothers and their dad were in the car. It brought the family together in a very beautiful way. After surviving such a serious car accident you don´t ever take life for granted. Every day and every second is a gift. It only took a half a second for another car to hit our car head on. Life can be taken away from you in a split second. After such an experience you stop worrying about material things and silly things. Life is so precious and life is so beautiful. I´m just thankful for every day I have on this earth. I may sound corny but it´s true, I´m so thankful that we all survived.

4. How did the idea came up to participate at the national pre selection?

It was actually my husbands idea and not mine hehehe. Me and him wrote Paper together with Lester Mendez and Lily Elise. For the last two years me and Einar, my husband, have been writing a lot of new music for our new band Blissful. And "Paper" came out of one of those writing sessions. We knew right away that this song was very epic and big. And my husband thought it would be a great idea to send it in to the national selection in Iceland. It took me a couple of days to be convinced but then I decided to do it cause the message is so important in my song and I knew that it would probably do pretty well there. Also I only wanted to compete in Eurovision if it was on my own terms and with a song that I co-wrote and could stand behind completely. And "Paper" is such a personal song and I´m very proud of it. And it feels right to compete with a song that I believe in so strongly.

5. What is the story behind your song „paper“?

I wrote my song “Paper” about a very personal experience. It´s about dealing with difficulties in your life but overcoming them. I´ve been very open in the media in Iceland that I dealt with a lot of anxiety throughout my teenage years and early twenties. Music has always been my salvation and my safe place and I wanted to write about what I went through when I dealt with those difficulties. We all deal with something in life. No one has a perfect life. This is what connects us as human beings. The word paper in my song is a metaphor for emotions. When I wrote the lyrics I wanted to describe the relationship I have with myself while dealing with anxiety. My anxiety makes me feel fragile and makes me feel vulnerable like paper. The purpose of me writing my song is to be open and honest about myself and not be ashamed about dealing with this. Because when we are open and when we talk to each other, we are setting ourselves free. By not being ashamed we are facing our fears and we are not giving up. I still have my bad days but thankfully I´m at a much better place now and anxiety doesn´t control my life anymore. But it´s so important to me to talk about it to be able to help others and inspire. Hopefully my song does that for people around the world that deal with difficulties in life.

6. How was your experience as a judge of the Voice in Iceland?

It has been such an amazing experience. I´ve been in the music business for a long time and basically since I was a little girl. And I love being able to be a mentor singers that are want to make it in the industry. I have so much to give and I love being able to support them and help them in taking their first steps towards their career. I became the ultimate stage mom with my team. I wanted all of them to win and do the best in the competition. I felt like they were my children heheh. Also being a part of such a huge tv show that´s in 62 countries around the world is such an honour. It is the biggest tv production ever made in Iceland and it´s been amazing to be a part of it.

7. For other countries actual participants of the Voice are going to Eurovision. Why are you going, even being judge of the same show?

Because I believe in the song I wrote.

8. What are your plans for the time after eurovision?

I´m releasing a lot of new music with my new band Blissful. And we are also releasing a lot of music videos that we direct ourselves that come out with the new music. I´ll be touring a lot around the world. And working on some new exciting projects.

9. Europe is in a very special decade. What is your message to our readers and to europe? What should be written on the „paper“ of europe

We have to lead by example!!! We need to always let love and compassion guide us. Live in the light and unite. Stay strong and not give up.

We thank Svala for this interview and wish the best for eurovision and the time afterwards... for sure for every single moment in life.
