The contest kicked officially off last night, so it’s time also to have another kind of view on the host country. For sure in the last year there have been no other country, which was so proud of being hosting the contest. And for the press and fans there has never been a country where eurovision and war has been so close.
Kiev is not just celebrating the biggest show in the world, they are also at the same time celebrating the victory about the Nazis in 1945. Also symbolic the two things are very close, because at the Maidan square in Kiev there is the memory of these second world war next to the eurovision logo, where locals and worldwide fans take pictures.
Maybe there are also less countries where kids are so used to war, that is looks natural to them to play with war guns. Also the performance of kids in army outfits seem to be part of the culture and something what has been seen during local memory parties in Kiev.
Also at the venue you notice everywhere that this country is in a war. So many police and militaries everywhere around the venue. Something we learnt to be used to again after the terrorism attacks in Brussels and France the last years. But still feels like strange in the eurovision environment.
Celebrate diversity is the theme of the eurovision - maybe we have to learn that diversity is also the diverse ways of life…with peace or a peaceful life within war.
It remembered how thankful everyone should be for a peaceful europe as place where to live. And how much respect we should have for countries which are fighting every day for have a normal life and this without guns!
And if Eurovision helps Ukraine to do a step into this direction we have to say, we absolutely love to do it.
