Eurovision's Greatest Hits - a review

Posted by Eurovision On Top on April 4, 2015 at 5:25 AM

Eurovisions 60th birthday celebration in London was a great success , 4000 fans gathered at the Hammersmith Apollo on tuesday night hoping for a spectacular show and were not disappointed.

As a bonus for the home audience before the filming began we were treated to the first ever live performance the UK entry for Vienna , still in love with you by Electro Velvet. To the relief of many of us the performance was excellent vocally … they can sing! The crowd roared.

The hosts then came on stage, UK Eurovision commentator Graham Norton and the 2013 Eurovision hostess the brilliantly funny Petra Mede.

First on stage was 2013 winner Emmelie de Forest . As the big drums came on stage excitement grew and then Emmelie barefoot as usual wowed the crowd with a brilliant performance of Only Teardrops.

Following Emmelie on to the stage was the first of tonights legends , the wonderful Anne Marie David , still sounding and looking fantastic , who treated the audience to a bilingual rendition of the 1973 winner Tu te reconnaitras . Huge cheers

The golden boots were replaced by sober suits for the Herreys performance of Diggi loo Diggi ley next , and although the moves were a little less energetic the song was still great fun after 31 years.

Although not the best vocally on the night Dana International looked amazing and the song Diva has aged well , the staging was visually spectacular and once again the audience loved it.

In between all the performances we had clips of many Eurovision entries over the years , the nostalgic moments from 60 years of the contest were great to see.

The Olsen brothers took to the stage next , hardly looking a day older , although Noller looking a little like he's eaten very well since 2001 gave a great performance of Fly on the wings of love , this had the audience swaying , still as anthemic as ever.

UK legends the Brotherhood of Man arrived to huge home cheers and as always performed the timeless Save your kisses for me, brilliantly. This was one of the best performances of the night. They've still got it and they have been great Eurovision ambassadors for the UK for nearly 40 years

Spanish flags were waving as Rosa took to the stage next to perform a medley of La La La , Vivo cantando and her own 2002 entry Europe’s living a celebration. Enthusiastic applause again .

One of the most emotional performances next from the stunning Nicole from Germany . Only 17 when she won in Harrogate in 1982 she gave us great rendition win Ein bisschen frieden in english italian and german. she was so overwhelmed by the love of the audienced she had tears. A great moment.

Interval time , one word Riverdance , as stunning and powerful as ever ! The woldwide phenomenon blew the audience away.

Looking as pretty as ever Lordi took to the stage to rock London , pyrotechnics and smoke , powerful performance.

As a complete contrast it was time for a french power ballad from the brilliant Natasha st Pier looking completely different but sounding wonderful , this for me would still have been a fantastic winner of the 2001 contest.

Controversy next as a large section of the crowd shamefully gave loud boos as Russia was mentioned , this was a celebration and not a night for politics (this would be edited out for the TV show , thankfully) , but great credit to Dima Bilan who gained a lot of fans by performing very well indeed a mix of his 2 entries Believe and Never let you go.

A great bundle of energy next as Bobbysocks marched onto stage to sing the schlager classic La det swinge , Norways first winner. Once again sounding and looking amazing. This euro classic has aged so well.

One of the most eagerly anticipated performances next from Loreen , Euphoria is one of the most successful entries ever and wow this was amazing inspite of her drastic new hair styling she went down a storm as expected.

The king of Eurovision next , sir Johnny Logan still in great voice he sang a mix of all 3 of his entries , What’s another year , Hold me now and Why me . He stills owns the stage 35 years after his first performance in the contest.

As Petra said , from the king to the queen of Eurovision we had a brief interview with the great Lys Assia who was in the audience as special guest.

And on to the current champion Conchita who absolutely brought the house down with a faultless rendition of Rise like a phoenix , the audience sang along and loved every second of this breathtaking performance.

And that was that … or was it ? no we had the finale to come ., and this was an unexpected wonderful bonus as the artists returned to sing a stupendous medley of Eurovision winners , what a fantastic way to close a truly great evening.

Congratulations to the BBC for producing such a magnificent show . A night i will never forget.

Happy birthday Eurovision
